Red Deer Rebels confirm return to the WHL Playoffs

The Rebels are so back.

Red Deer sealed a return to the postseason after a one-season absence by nature of a 4-1 Moose Jaw Warriors loss to the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night.

The Central Division club is currently on the ice for its regular-season finale against the reigning WHL Champion Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Rebels have proved they’re never out of the running after pulling together a new hard-scrabble identity post-2026 WHL Trade Deadline.

Entering Friday’s action, the Rebels earned points in seven of their last 10 games, including two hard-fought wins over the East Division-leading Prince Albert Raiders.

2026 NHL Draft-eligible forward Beckett Hamilton has broken out for 60 points (24G-36A) to lead the Rebels in scoring in his sophomore season.

Hamilton, who is ranked 75th among all North American skaters leading into the Draft, has averaged more than a point per game in the second half of the season.

Red Deer was one of the busiest clubs on the trade front in 2025-26, selling high on some highly-touted NHL prospects while bringing in up-and-coming talent and a slew of draft picks.

Look no further than Hamilton’s fellow 20-goal scorers Poul Anderson (acquired alongside Boris Sigachev and Brock Stevenson in the Jaxon Fuder trade with Edmonton on December 27) and NHL Draft-eligible Kalder Varga (who joined Red Deer from Kelowna in exchange for Keith McInnis).

The Rebels feature 11 first-year WHL players, including defencemen Nate Yellowaga, Red Deer’s top scoring defender, and draft-eligible Czech Jiri Kamas.

That said, the team has plenty of veteran leadership in Captain Talon Brigley, who has grinded out three trips to the WHL Playoffs while becoming one of the league’s active games-played leaders with 328 regular-season appearances- all with the Rebels.

In net, rookie Matthew Kondro has put together a 19-17-4-1 record, a 3.32 goals-against average, a .897 save percentage and one shutout, highlighted by a 54-save win over the Tigers on February 13, 2026.

The Rebels captured their first and only WHL Championship after a staggering run in 2000-01.

Red Deer went 54-12-3-3 through the regular season to earn the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as WHL regular-season champions before going 16-6 through the playoffs to win it all.

The Rebels squad that featured the likes of NHL journeyman Martin Erat, 2001 WHL Player of the Year Justin Mapletoft and current Pittsburgh Penguins broadcaster Colby Armstrong marched on to defeat the Val D’or Foreurs 6-5 in overtime to lift the Memorial Cup in Regina, Sask., later that spring.

Rebels great Kyle Wanvig won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the Memorial Cup MVP.

Red Deer is locked in as the eighth seed in the East and will battle the Eastern Conference-winning Prince Albert Raiders in first-round action.
