Luca Cagnoni, Carter Sotheran selected in the 2023 NHL Draft
Nashville, Tenn. – Portland Winterhawks defensemen Luca Cagnoni and Carter Sotheran today became the 147th and 148th Winterhawks to be selected in the NHL Draft, a WHL all-time best, and marked the fifth consecutive season in which a Portland player was chosen during the NHL’s annual event.
Cagnoni was the team’s first skater chosen in the 2023 draft when the San Jose Sharks nabbed the third-year Winterhawk with the 123rd overall pick in the fourth round. The Burnaby, B.C. native was named Co-Most Valuable Player during the Hawks’ end-of-season awards after leading all defensemen in scoring with 17 goals and 47 assists for 64 points in 67 games.

The rookie blueliner ranked second among all first-year WHL defensemen with four goals and 19 assists for 23 points during the 2022-23 regular season, and logged key minutes alongside Cagnoni throughout the campaign.
