HITMEN EDGE REBELS – Chase Clayton’s 12th goal of the season 17:55 into the third period stood as the game-winner as the visiting Calgary Hitmen edged the Red Deer Rebels 3-2 in Western Hockey League action on Tuesday.
Jimmy Bubnick – with his 31st of the season – and Brady Brassart also scored for the Hitmen (40-24-2-1), who have won five of their last six games and sit just two points back of Medicine Hat for third place in the Eastern Conference. Brandon Glover turned aside 33 of 35 shots to post his 19th win of the season.
Matt Dumba notched a goal and an assist while Tyson Ness also scored for the Rebels (30-30-1-5), who remain eight points out of a playoff spot with just six games left on their schedule. Deven Dubyk turned in a 40-save performance in a losing cause.
THUNDERBIRDS 3, COUGARS 1
Brad Deagle and Luke Lockhart each scored second-period goals to help the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds to a 3-1 triumph over the Prince George Cougars on Tuesday.
Connor Sanvido – with his seventh of the season – also counted for the Thunderbirds (22-41-1-1), who snap a four-game losing skid and move just one point back of Everett for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Calvin Pickard made 21 saves to earn the win as he passes Kyle Moir for second on the WHL’s all-time games played list at 234 career appearances.
Austin Daae scored the lone marker for the Cougars (20-44-0-2), who remain five points behind the ‘Tips for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Drew Owsley made 23 saves in absorbing the loss.
BRONCOS 4, ICE 3
Christian Magnus scored twice and set up another to pace the Swift Current Broncos to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Kootenay Ice on Tuesday night.
Former Ice player Adam Rossignol scored the go-ahead goal 15:10 into the third period while Ryon Moser picked up a goal and an assist for the Broncos (25-35-2-6), who were 0-for-2 on the power play. Jon Groenheyde made 32 saves to earn the victory.
Max Reinhart – with a goal and an assist – Elgin Pearce and Joe Antilla scored and Erik Benoit chipped in two assists for the Ice (35-23-4-4), who now sit five points behind the Hitmen for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Nathan Lieuwen made 26 saves in the setback.
HURRICANES 2, WARRIORS 1
Phil Tot scored the go-ahead goal 11:19 into the third period to lead the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday.
Russ Maxwell also counted for the Hurricanes (27-39-0-1), who split their home-and-home series versus the Warriors. Damien Ketlo turned in a 37-save effort to backstop the Hurricanes to the victory.
Cody Beach – with his 13th of the season – scored the only goal for the Warriors (41-18-5-2), who still need just one point to clinch the East Division crown. Luke Siemens made 15 saves in a losing effort.
