TUESDAY’S WHL PLAYOFF MATCH-UPS
GIANTS WELCOME AMERICANS FOR GAME 3 – Brendan Gallagher and the Vancouver Giants host Carter Ashton and the Tri-City Americans for Game 3 of their Kal Tire WHL Western Conference quarter-final series in WHL playoff action on Tuesday.
The Americans own a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series after posting a 2-1 overtime win in Game 1 of the series on Friday in Kennewick, WA, followed by a 5-4 win on Saturday night. The Americans won once in two trips to Vancouver during the regular season. Ashton scored the overtime winner in game 1 of the series for his only point through the first two games.
The Giants come home down 0-2 in the series after dropping the first two games on the road, and need a victory to avoid falling behind by three games. Giants’ goaltender Mark Segal faced 79 shots through the first two games of the series. Gallagher has one of the Giants’ five goals in the series.
The Giants will host the Ams for Game 4 of the best-of-seven series on Wednesday in Vancouver.
Elsewhere in Kal Tire WHL Western Conference quarter-final action on Tuesday, Sena Acolatse and the Prince George Cougars host Shane McColgan and the Kelowna Rockets for Game 3 of their first-round series.
The Rockets head into Game 3 boasting a 2-0 series lead after claiming 4-1 and 7-4 wins in Games 1 and 2 of the series in Kelowna on the weekend. McColgan has recorded five assists through the first two games of the series.
The Cougars find themselves down 0-2 in the series after losing the first two games in Kelowna, and will look for their first post-season win since the 2006-07 season in Game 3 of the series on Tuesday. The Cougars blew a 4-3 lead in the third period of Game 2 in Kelowna on Saturday, allowing four third-period goals.
The Cougars will host the Rockets for Game 4 of the series on Wednesday.
HUSKY WHL EASTERN CONFERENCE
Quinton Howden and the Moose Jaw Warriors host Max Reinhart and the Kootenay Ice for Game 3 of their Husky WHL Eastern Conference quarter-final series on Tuesday.
The Warriors come home to Moose Jaw with the series knotted up at 1-1 after the opening two games in Cranbrook, B.C., on the weekend, having posted a 4-0 shutout win in Game 1 on Friday before falling 5-2 to the Ice on Saturday. Howden has scored three of the Warriors’ six goals in the series.
The Ice gave up home-ice advantage in the series after splitting Games 1 and 2 with the Warriors on the weekend, and will now need at least one win in Moose Jaw if they are to advance to the next round. The Ice have killed off all 16 Moose Jaw power play chances through the first two games of the series.
The Warriors will host Game 4 of the best-of-seven series on Wednesday night in Moose Jaw.
