TRADE: Warriors add Semeniuk, multiple picks from Vancouver
Moose Jaw, SK — The Moose Jaw Warriors have made a trade with the Vancouver Giants on Friday.
The Warriors acquire 2005-born forward Ethan Semeniuk, first and fifth round picks in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft and a second round pick in 2025 in exchange for 2006-born defenceman Marek Howell and a fourth round pick in 2024.
“We’re getting a player that can play in our top-nine and for us to get some more draft assets to continue building our hockey club, whether it’s through the draft or a trade,” Warriors general manager Jason Ripplinger said.
Semeniuk, 18, is heading into his third Western Hockey League season after originally being selected by the Giants in the third round of the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft.
In 54 games last season, Semeniuk posted 12 goals and 22 points. As a 16-year-old rookie in 2021-22, he finished with eight goals and 13 points in 56 games, while adding two goals and three points in 12 playoff games.
“Ethan has high-end speed, he has skill, he scored 12 goals last year, so we’re looking for him to add more depth to our forward group,” Ripplinger said.
Howell, 17, was a first round pick by the Warriors in 2021. He played in 49 games with the organization over the past two seasons.
“Following the season, Marek approached us about the possibility of moving on from the organization and we wanted to accommodate him the best we could,” Ripplinger said. “We wish him the best of luck with the Giants.”
The Warriors will return to the Hangar coming up at the end of August for the team’s 2023 training camp.
