TIGERS VETS LOOK TO STEP UP
The Medicine Hat Tigers will play their first exhibition game this weekend at the annual preseason tourney in Edmonton and, as has become tradition, will ice a young group looking to impress the coaching staff.
But when the season officially opens Sept. 19 in Lethbridge, there aren’t many questions about who will be expected to carry the bulk of the responsibilities.
The team that reached the conference semifinals this past spring will head into this campaign minus three veterans who led the way last season. Leading scorer Curtis Valk, top-scoring defenceman Dylan Bredo and powerhouse winger Jacob Doty have all moved on leaving a core group of returning players to fill the void.
“I think it’s great that we’re returning lots of guys,” said head coach and general manager Shaun Clouston. “But we’ve lost three great leaders that will be missed, and I think that leadership is crucial. I think bringing lots of guys back is great but the challenge is making sure the older players are ready to lead by example the way those three graduating players did.”
