TIGERS LOSE CLOSE ONE TO OIL KINGS
The Tigers headed to Edmonton to take on the defending Eastern Conference Champion Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday night. The Tigers didn’t fair well against the Oil Kings last season posting a 1-4-1-0 record. Looking to turn that around this season, the Tigers gave the Oil Kings a challenge in their first of six match ups. Unfortunately for the Tigers, despite leading at the second intermission they weren’t able to come away with the victory. The Oil Kings sneaked out a 4-3 win with a late third period goal.
Henrik Samuelsson opened the scoring in the first period with his second of the season from Edgars Kulda and Cody Corbett. The goal came while the Oil Kings had the extra skater after Ty Stanton was sent off for a roughing minor. The Tigers would knot the game up before the period was over though. Cole Sanford scored his team leading fourth goal of the season. Trevor Cox and Tyler Lewington picked up the assists on the marker.
The Tigers came out strong to start the second and used the man advantage to take their first lead of the game. Curtis Valk put home his second of the season only 1:50 into the period. In his first WHL game, newcomer Tommy Vannelli found the scoresheet with an assist while Dylan Bredo added to his totals with the other. The lead wouldn’t last long though as Cody Corbett responded with his third only 24 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2. The Tigers would keep pushing though and found the scoreboard once more with only 1:13 remaining in the period. Tyler Lewington scored his first of the year from Gavin Broadhead and Chad Labelle.
The Oil Kings made the most of their chances in the third period to mount a comeback. Corbett and Samuelsson would both add another goal to their evening totals in the final frame. Corbett’s goal tied the game at the 5:38 mark from Samuelsson and Mitchell Moroz. Samuelsson’s marker gave the Oil Kings their first lead since the midway point of the first. Aaron Irving picked up the lone assist on the goal. The Tigers continued to pressure hard but were unable to beat Tristan Jarry to force overtime.
Marek Langhamer saw his second game of action in net for the Tigers this season. Langhamer picked up his first loss allowing four goals against on 27 shots. Tristan Jarry was the starter for the Oil Kings. Jarry won his second game of the season saving all but three of the Tigers 36 shots.
The Tigers went 1 for 5 on the power play and were able to kill off 2 of the 3 Oil Kings’ power play opportunities.
