TIGERS DROP REBELS 5-3
The Tigers and Rebels faced off for the sixth and final time this season. The two teams have become very familiar with each other as this is their third game in the past nine days. The Tigers have posted a 2-2-0-1 record against the Rebels and were looking for a win to take the season series. The Tigers battled hard and came away with a 5-3 win to take the season series and inch closer to securing home ice in the first round.
The Tigers got on the board first with Curtis Valk scoring a beauty at the 6:40 mark of the first period. Valk got behind the defence for the breakaway and made no mistake. Trevor Cox made the goal possible with a great feed to find the streaking Valk. The Rebels tied the game less than two minutes later. Scott Feser scored his 13th of the season from Kayle Doetzel and Wyatt Johnson. Red Deer would take their first lead later in the period as Adam Musil netted his 10th of the season from Scott Feser. The Tigers would tie the game up before the intermission as Blake Penner scored his 11th of the season unassisted.
Valk would strike again in the second period with his team leading 43rd of the season. The goal came on the power play only 54 seconds into the period and was set up by Trevor Cox and Dylan Bredo. Midway through the period Anthony Ast made it a 4-2 game with a shorthanded goal. Coming down on a two on one, Curtis Valk found Ast in the slot and he shovelled in the puck for his 17th of the season. The Rebels would cut the lead back down to one four minutes later. Wyatt Johnson scored his 13th of the season unassisted to make it a 4-3 game heading into the final intermission.
The two teams battled hard throughout the third and the score stayed the same until the final minutes. Down only a goal the Rebels decided to pull their goalie for the extra attacker. Curtis Valk finished off the hat trick with an empty net goal to make it a 5-3 game and secure the victory. Trevor Cox and Dylan Bredo picked up the helpers on the goal.
Marek Langhamer got the start in net for the Tigers. He picked up the win making 21 saves on 24 shots. With the win his season record improved to 22-13-2-1. Patrik Bartosak was the starter for the Rebels. Despite picking up the loss, he played well stopping 40 of 44 shots. His season record falls to 31-25-1-4 with the loss.
The Tigers went 1 for 4 on the power play while killing off both Rebels’ power play chances.
