Medicine Hat, AB – Spots were few and far between for those looking to crack the Medicine Hat Tigers lineup this fall.
So you had to wonder why, with a strong batch of older players already penciled in, a 19-year-old made the cut.
“In some ways that could work against you,” said Tigers head coach Shaun Clouston. “There’s younger guys that if they’re real close, you’re probably tempted to hang on to the younger players.”
But it turns out keeping Sam Dezman wasn’t a tough choice at all.
Dezman’s road to the WHL began in 2006, when the Edmonton forward was picked in the eight round, 168th overall by Medicine Hat in the bantam draft.
After a year in midget AAA, Dezman nearly made the Tigers as a 17-year-old but instead had a point-per-game season with the Boston Pizza Athletics.
He was playing with the junior A Spruce Grove Saints early in the 2008-09 season when he suffered a concussion that kept him off the ice for two weeks.
