Oil Kings Teddy Bear Toss Night presented by The Brick breaks two records
EDMONTON, AB – It was a bear-y good night for the Oil Kings with holiday spirit front and centre at Rexall Place during the annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by The Brick. The Oil Kings were certainly in the giving spirit on Saturday night giving their fans a 2-1 win in their two-point performance against the visiting Swift Current Broncos. The gifts kept coming as left winger and hometown boy Tyler Robertson’s goal at 3:11 of the first period sent 12,655 teddy bears and stuffed toys to the ice, shattering last year’s previous teddy bear record of 11,000.
This year’s Teddy Bear Toss certainly delivered on its promise to be the best one yet as the Oil Kings also set a new attendance record for the Teddy Bear Toss soirée in franchise history at Rexall Place with 15,022 fans cheering the Oil Kings on to victory.
Robertson, 19, is in his third season with the Oil Kings and hails from Sherwood Park, AB. He joins the list of past esteemed Teddy Bear Goal scorers including Brett Breitkreuz (2007-08), Michael Burns (2008-09), Lane Werbowski (2009-10), Mitch Moroz (2011-12), Edgars Kulda (2012-13), Dysin Mayo (2013-14) and Andrew Koep (2014-15).
“It’s a big goal, and since it’s going to such a great cause, I’m really happy to score it,” shared Robertson.
In addition to making history during their last season at Rexall Place, more fans and bears means that 630 CHED Santas Anonymous will be able to provide more toys to less fortunate children in Edmonton this holiday season.
“The Edmonton Oil Kings are proud to have partnered with 630 CHED Santas Anonymous, an absolutely amazing charity that does great work in our community,” said Kevin Radomski, Director of Business Operations for the Oil Kings. “Thank you to our passionate fans for helping those in need right here in Edmonton. We truly have the best fans in the WHL.”
Over the past nine seasons, approximately 85,022 fans have donated 61,874 bears, making the night one of the most anticipated on the Oil Kings calendar, and the team and fans alike are already looking forward to next year’s 10th anniversary.
