For a second straight game the Oil Kings found themselves down 2-0 in the first period as the Tigers got a goal from Tyler MacKenzie at the 9:16 mark on a backdoor setup from Cayden Lindstrom and then with just over five minutes left in the frame, Bogdans Hodass extended the visitor’s lead with a perfectly placed shot from the bottom of the left circle.
The Oil Kings did outshoot the Tigers 10-8 in the period but had to settle for a two-goal deficit at the first intermission.
A tough start to the second period saw the Oil Kings appear to halve the Medicine Hat lead just over a minute in after Smyth Rebman shoveled home a centering pass from Marc Lajoie at the tail end of a power play, for what would have been his first career WHL goal, only to have it waved off upon video review which showed the Oil Kings committed a high-sticking penalty earlier in the shift.
On the four-minute power play, the Tigers would pounce getting a goal from Lindstrom at the 2:48 mark of the period to extend their lead to three, and then just as the second half of the power play expired, Reid Andresen poured in the Tigers fourth goal of the game thanks to a nice setup from Oasiz Wiesblatt.
The Oil Kings maintained their lead on the shot clock after two periods with a 21-20 margin but took a 4-0 deficit to the second intermission.
In the third period, the Oil Kings would get a power play goal from Roan Woodward, his second tally of the season, with nine minutes left in the game, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed just seconds later after Oasiz Wiesblatt issued a quick response for the Tigers to give them a 5-1 lead.
Kolby Hay finished the night making 21 saves for the Oil Kings, while Evan May made 30 for the Tigers. Edmonton went 1-for-9 on the power play, the Tigers were 1-for-4.
