Oil Kings trade Jakub Demek to Kamloops Blazers for four draft picks
Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings have acquired four draft picks from the Kamloops Blazers in exchange for 2003-born import forward Jakub Demek.
The drafts picks the Oil Kings receive in the trade are a 2023 first-round pick (via Regina), a conditional 2024 second-round pick, a conditional 2026 third-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick.
“This trade is another very important trade for our franchise,” said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kirt Hill. “We felt that it was important to continue to recover from some of the moves we made to build our team for last season’s WHL Championship and Memorial Cup run.
“The opportunity to recover a first-round pick in the upcoming draft and potentially three additional draft picks were something we felt we couldn’t afford to ignore.”
Demek, 19, has yet to appear in a game this season for the Oil Kings after undergoing shoulder surgery in September. Last season, he appeared in 55 games registering 54 points (20G, 34A), a +18 plus/minus rating and 39 penalty minutes.
“We would like to wish Jakub all the best with the Kamloops Blazers and their run for the Memorial Cup,” added Hill. “Jakub was a major part of our success in capturing the Ed Chynoweth Cup last season and has been a strong leader in our room this season, even while dealing with his current injury.
“This was an opportunity to give Jakub the chance to have a long season once he returns from injury and put him in a great position to potentially move onto professional hockey next season. We can’t thank Jakub enough for the positive energy he brought to the rink day in and day out and his all the contributions he made both on and off the ice to the Oil Kings.”
During the 2022 WHL Playoffs, he dressed in 19 games and put up 17 points (5G, 12A). In game six of the WHL Championship Series, he scored the game and championship winning goal in Edmonton’s 2-0 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds.
At the 2022 Memorial Cup, he added one assist in three games and set a tournament record in the Oil Kings’ opening game against the Shawinigan Cataractes by winning 26 faceoffs, the most in a single-game ever at the tournament, since the stat began being kept.
This past summer, he represented Slovakia at the 2022 World Junior Championship and had one assist in four games.
Demek was acquired by the Oil Kings in 2021 when they selected him in the first round, 47th-overall, of that year’s CHL Import Draft. He is a prospect of the Vegas Golden Knights after they selected him in the fourth round, 128th-overall, of the 2021 NHL Draft.
The Oil Kings thank Jakub for his commitment to the Oil Kings both on and off the ice and wish him the best of luck with his new club.
The Edmonton Oil Kings next home game is Tuesday, November 15 when they welcome the Red Deer Rebels to Rogers Place at 7:00 P.M.
