GAME SUMMARY: Oil Kings claw back again, defeat Prince Albert
Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings (27-9-2-1) scored four unanswered goals in the third period on Tuesday night as they came back to defeat the Prince Albert Raiders (15-19-1-1) 4-1 at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings and Raiders played a sound defensive first period as both teams kept one another to the perimeter and despite combining for 24 shots on goal in the frame, they arrived at the first intermission scoreless.
A penalty filled second period saw both teams given four power play chances but the only offence that would be found came off a shorthanded marker from Raiders captain Reece Vitelli who was sprung on a breakaway and after his initial shot was stopped by Sebastian Cossa, he was able to bang home his own rebound at 17:35 to send the Raiders to the second intermission ahead 1-0.
The Oil Kings fired 20 shots on Raiders netminder Tikhon Chaika in the middle stanza, for a two-period total of 35, but the import goaltender continued to stand his ground.
The Oil Kings were finally able to break the Prince Albert goaltender down in the third period as at the 7:08 mark of the period, Dylan Guenther snuck a shot past Chaika from the left-wing wall to tie the game at one just as an Oil Kings power play had expired.
Luke Prokop staked the Oil Kings to the lead just under five minutes later after he batted home a rebound out of mid-air following a rebound off a Carter Souch shot.
Jaxsen Wiebe gave the Oil Kings some breathing room just 27 seconds later as he took a pass from fellow Moose Jaw, SK product Ethan Peters in the high slot and wired a shot perfectly under the crossbar to make it 3-1 Edmonton.
Josh Williams added his 20th goal of the year with just under three minutes to play as he hit the empty net to the seal the Oil Kings 4-1 victory. Oil Kings forward Justin Sourdif collected an assist on the Williams goal for his first career point as an Oil King in his first career game.
Cossa recorded his league leading 19th win in the Edmonton crease turning away all but one of Prince Albert’s 22 shots, while Chaika took the loss, but earned second star honours by making 44 saves on 47 shots. The Oil Kings went zero-for-seven on the power play, the Raiders were zero-for-five.
Next up, the Oil Kings are back on home ice next Tuesday, January 25 when they take on the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7:00 PM.
