Spokane Chiefs training camp teams: Team Whitfield
This year’s competition for the Annual Chiefs Cup, the championship trophy awarded to the winner of the Spokane Chiefs Training Camp, will feature teams named after former players, one representing each decade of Chiefs history.
Sixty-eight players will be split amongst four teams and take part in three days of scrimmages beginning on Thursday, August 27th at Numerica Veterans Arena. The team names will be released once a day this week.
Monday, August 17th: TEAM GILCHRIST (1985-87)
Tuesday, August 18th: TEAM WHITFIELD (1994-98)
Wednesday, August 19th: TEAM 3
Thursday, August 20th: TEAM 4
TEAM WHITFIELD
Trent Whitfield may have led the WHL league in check marks. Need leadership, check. Scoring, check. Defense, check. Grit, you get the picture. Whitfield is one of three players in the history of the franchise to score 30 or more goals three different times. He is also the franchise’s leader in career playoff scoring with 29 goals and 62 points. His 56 career playoff games are tied with his former teammate Greg Leeb for fourth all-time. He sits 12th on the career goals scored list with 114, 14th with 155 career assists and 13th all-time in scoring with 269 points. He averaged 1.08 points per game, 18th in franchise history, in 248 career games. His 34 goals and 76 points in 1996-97 placed him on the WHL’s All-Star team. Whitfield joined his teammate Hugh Hamilton and coach Mike Babcock on the 1997 gold medal winning Canadian World Junior Team.
He also captained the 1998 45-win Chiefs that hosted the Memorial Cup. Two-years prior, Whitfield played on a 50-win team, scoring 33 goals and a career high 84 points.
After being selected in the fourth round by the Boston Bruins in 1996, Whitfield played 16 years professionally, including nine in the NHL where he appeared in 194 games between the Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Bruins. After spending 10 years as an Assistant Coach of the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League, Whitfield was recently named their head coach.
Whitfield was named to the Chiefs original List of Legends when the Chiefs celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2010.
