Chiefs fall to Seattle Thunderbirds on the road, 8-3
Kent, Wash. — The Spokane Chiefs dropped their third game in a row on Saturday night, as the Seattle Thunderbirds skated to a 8-3 victory. Spokane’s 2022 first-round pick (8th overall) forward Chase Harrington made his WHL debut.
Seattle opened the scoring at 11:32 when Jared Davidson scored his fourth goal of the year with help from Bryce Pickford and Kevin Korchinski. Coster Dunn pushed the Thunderbirds’ lead to two just 20 seconds later as he scored his first of the season.
The Chiefs managed to keep Seattle at bay for the rest of the frame, but didn’t find the net themselves and headed into the first break down 2-0.
Spokane came out hot in the second period, scoring three goals in less than three minutes.
It started when Ty Cheveldayoff chipped a rebound past Seattle netminder Thomas Milic at 2:47 for a power play goal and Cheveldayoff’s fourth of the season. Rookie Berkly Catton and defenseman Graham Sward earned assists on the play.
A minute and a half later, Catton swiped the puck away from Davidson and got it to Chase Bertholet for a breakway to the net. He rushed toward the crease and flipped the puck backhanded into the net to tie the game up at 4:16.

Then, at 5:08, Carter Streek pushed the puck behind him to Kooper Gizowski who found the twine with a snipe from the left faceoff circle to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead. It was Gizowski’s eleventh point of the season so far. Sward also earned his second assist of the night on the play.
Seattle answered with three more goals of their own, though. Reid Schaefer notched back-to-back goals at 6:49 and 10:19 to put the lead back in the Thunderbirds’ favor at 4-3.
Lucas Ciona padded the lead to 5-3 with his sixth of the year at 16:08.
The third period was all Seattle, as the Thunderbirds added three more goals from Sam Popowich (3:04), Jeremy Hanzel (8:50) and Sawyer Mynio with less than two minutes left in the game to cap the scoring at 8-3.
Spokane was outshot 49-31 and went 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Rookie netminder Cooper Michaluk started in goal for the Chiefs and finished with a season-high 42 saves.
