Boston Pizza Recap: Broncos thumped by high-flying Hurricanes
SWIFT CURRENT, SK – The Swift Current Broncos (5-12-1-2) faced a stiff test on home ice Wednesday night, welcoming the Lethbridge Hurricanes (15-6-0-3) to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex and dropping a 6-2 game.
Lethbridge opened the scoring just 43 seconds in when Dylan Cozens jumped on the rebound off a long shot from the line.
The Hurricanes peppered Klassen with shots over the entire opening 20 minutes, firing 17 shots on net. Klassen stopped them all after that opening goal as the Broncos were down 1-0 after one.
Looking for a stronger start to the second, the Broncos didn’t get that as the Hurricanes added to their lead just 2:02 into the frame. Zack Stringer was hauled down on the rush to draw a penalty, but Alex Cotton picked up the loose puck and roofed it over Klassen’s glove to make it 2-0.
Logan Barlage added to the lead just a minute and a half later, taking a rink-wide pass off the rush and firing a one timer that Klassen got a lot of, but just rolled over the goal line to make it 3-0.
Ethan Regnier stopped the bleeding when he intercepted a Cozens drop pass and came in on a clear-cut breakaway, sliding it through the five hole of Carl Tetachuk.
Lethbridge wasted no time answering back when Noah Boyko deflected in a shot from the blue line on a power play to make it 4-1.
Matthew Benson was handed a five-minute interference major not long after the goal to put the Broncos down for five minutes, but the Hurricanes couldn’t capitalize.
After keeping the puck in the Broncos zone for nearly two full minutes, it was cleared down the ice on Tetachuk who fired it towards his bench to keep play going. The Hurricanes were called for too many men to negate two minutes of the major.
The game was 4-1 heading into the third and Lethbridge quickly added to their lead. D-Jay Jerome pushed the lead to 5-1 just 1:01 into the third.
Trevor Thurston added his first career WHL goal seven minutes later before Aiden Bulych ended the game on a high note by scoring with just 13 seconds left to make the final score 6-2.
The Broncos look to rebound Friday night when they host the Regina Pats to the iPlex for Swift Current 57’s night. The Broncos will wear specially co-branded jerseys and limited edition merchandise will be available.
