Boston Pizza Post Game Recap: Broncos can’t overcome first period deficit, fall 4-2
The Broncos payed a visit to the ENMAX Centre for a matchup against the Hurricanes on Saturday night for their third of four meetings this season.
An early power play chance for Swift Current went against them unfortunately as the Hurricanes Danila Palivko snuck one by the glove hand of Broncos goaltender Riley Lamb on a shorthanded rush.
With the score 1-0 for Lethbridge, the Broncos got a break when the Hurricanes’ Koletrane Wilson got caught tossing his stick in the middle of play and the officials awarded Swift Current with a penalty shot. Alternate captain Ethan Regnier was chosen to take the shot and he completed a smooth move to beat Canes netminder Carl Tetachuk five-hole.
The Hurricanes countered to grab a 2-1 lead as Jordy Bellerive fired one over the glove hand of Lamb from the left faceoff circle. Noah Boyko then made it 3-1 Lethbridge as his power play goal came in the final minute of first period play.
The second period began with a bang as the Broncos’ Matthew Stanley and the Hurricanes’ Scott Mahovlich dropped the mitts for an emotional fight that landed both skaters five minutes in the penalty box.
Lethbridge went ahead 4-1 as Calen Addison scored at the 14:15 mark of the second period but the Broncos got one back before the second intermission.
On a Swift Current man advantage, defenceman Connor Horning stepped into a perfect wrist shot from the point that beat Tetachuk and made it a 4-2 game through 40 minutes.
The 20-year-old Lamb did everything he could to keep his club in it, recording 17 additional saves in the third period as part of his 41 saves overall. Swift Current pulled Lamb for the extra attacker however the offence had trouble getting pucks on net and the final score was 4-2 for Lethbridge.
Shots on goal were 45-17 in favour of Lethbridge. Both clubs went 1/4 on the power play.
Swift Current heads east to clash against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday, February 8th at Westoba Place. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm CT.
