Boston Pizza Post Game Recap: Lamb dishes 47 saves, Broncos earn point in overtime loss
Swift Current’s seven-game road trip hit the midpoint mark on Saturday night for their fourth and final meeting against the Medicine Hat Tigers at the Canalta Centre.
Prince Albert, SK native Ethan Regnier positioned the Broncos ahead 1-0 in the first, reaching double digits in goals as Regnier earned his 10th of the season. Finnish forward Joona Kiviniemi was cutting hard towards the Tigers goal with the puck and then completed a drop pass to find an open Regnier.
Tigers forward Nick McCarry evened the score 56 seconds later, one-timing a shot through Broncos goalie Riley Lamb from right in front of the Swift Current crease.
Broncos captain Tanner Nagel slammed his 13th of the season from in close to put his team ahead 2-1 at the 3:41 mark of the middle frame. Regnier found Nagel with a slick pass from the corner in the Tigers end to find a cutting Nagel who strode towards the Tigers net up the slot area.
The Broncos were looking for more as they had a marvelous opportunity with a 5-on-3 power play for 1:28 but could not get that insurance marker. Medicine Hat saw the tides go in their favour as the Broncos took a couple minor penalties to see themselves shorthanded a couple skaters. Penalty kill effort was effective as the visiting Broncos blanked the Tigers on their two-man advantage and remained in front 2-1 going into the third period.
Broncos forward Kye Buchanan took a two-minute charging penalty with 5:07 left in the third period allowing the Tigers to have a chance to get the score even on a man advantage. Penalty kill play remained solid for Swift as they successfully killed off their fourth straight penalty to keep their one-goal lead.
With the net empty for Medicine Hat, Tigers defenceman Linus Nassen found the back of the net with a long wrist shot off an offensive zone faceoff win from teammate James Hamblin. The goal came with 59.5 seconds left in regulation and effectively forced overtime.
The Broncos saw some bad luck occur as Medicine Hat’s Ryan Chyzowski gained possession of the puck on a 2-on-0 rush and retained it before roofing a shot by Lamb to send Swift Current to their 14th straight defeat.
Despite the loss, Lamb earned first star honours for his impressive 47 save outing. Shots on goal were 50-23 in favour of the Tigers while both clubs finished 0/4 on the power play.
Swift Current’s lengthy road swing continues as their fifth stop of the trip occurs in North Saskatchewan for a date against the Prince Albert Raiders on Tuesday, March 5th at the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm CT.
