Boston Pizza Post Game Recap: Hofer sharp in the crease, but road woes continue for Broncos
Life on the road resumed for the Swift Current Broncos with a Sunday afternoon matinee against the Prince George Cougars. Broncos goaltender Joel Hofer was excellent yet again as he turned aside 37 Cougars shots but Swift Current’s losing skid reached four straight after a 3-1 loss.
Swift Current surrendered the first goal of the game at the 6:42 mark of the opening frame when Ethan Browne netted one for Prince George.
The Broncos countered back on a power play opportunity halfway through the first as 20-year-old forward Tanner Nagel scored a superb goal. Nagel, battling for position in the Cougars crease, got possession of a rebound from a Alec Zawatsky shot and from the doorstep, raised a backhander by Cougars netminder Taylor Gauthier.
The second period saw back-and-forth play between both clubs with the shots being very close, a 12-11 margin for Prince George to be exact and both goalies stopped every puck faced their way to keep the score deadlocked at ones.
Swift Current started the third period shorthanded five-on-three for 1:38 and did a great job to get key blocked shots along with big saves from Hofer to return to even strength still tied.
Cougars forward Jackson Leppard broke the tie a minute later though, firing a quick release from the high slot that beat Hofer five-hole.
The Broncos never recovered the rest of the way as the Cougars further boosted their lead to 3-1 and won the game by that same score.
Shots on goal favoured the Cougars 40-31. Both clubs went 1/4 on the power play.
The Broncos will wrap up their B.C. road trip on Tuesday evening when they meet the Kelowna Rockets at Prospera Place. Puck drop is set for 8:05pm MT.
