Five Broncos Heading to NHL Camps
Swift Current, Sask. – The Swift Current Broncos will see five of their players head to NHL Camps this week.
Forward Josh Filmon is headed to New Jersey Devils camp this year after debuting with the organization last season. The 2022 6th Round Pick of the Devils debuted with the Utica Comets last season, scoring one goal in four games. In 64 games with the Broncos in 2022/2023, Filmon scored 47 goals and added 28 assists for 75 points, leading the team in both goals and points.
Connor Hvidston will be heading to Anaheim Ducks camp this fall after he also debuted with the organization last season. The 19-year-old forward got into seven games with the San Diego Gull at the end of year, scoring one goal in the process. In the WHL, Hvidston was third on the Broncos in scoring a season ago, notching 65 points in 59 games, which included 44 assists, good for second on the team.
Last season’s Captain, Owen Pickering is in Pittsburgh once again for Penguins camp. The former 21st overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft got into eight games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins last season, but was held pointless. In 61 games for the Broncos, Pickering was the team leader among defencemen in points, assists, and was tied for the team lead in goals. He scored nine times and added 36 assists for 45 points.
Newly acquired local product Ryan McCleary heads into his 20-year-old season and will be taking his talents to New York Rangers camp after joining the club for development camp this spring. The former 7th Round Pick of the Penguins is currently a free agent. Joining the Broncos in a trade from the Portland Winterhawks, McCleary spent three seasons south of the border. In 147 games with Portland, the big defender has 21 goals and 47 assists for 68 career WHL points.
Between the pipes, goalie Joey Rocha will be heading to Edmonton Oilers rookie camp and will participate in the Young Stars Classic in Penticton. Rocha, currently undrafted, played 18 games for the Broncos last season earning an 8-5-0 record to go along with a 2.85 goals-against-average, and a .906 save percentage. Rocha also earned his first career WHL shutout on March 3, 2023, stopping 24 shots against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Fellow netminder Reid Dyck was set to go to Boston Bruins camp but is now unable to attend due to injury.
