City of Swift Current to play host to 2019 Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada

Sportsnet is bringing Canada’s biggest single-day hockey celebration back to Saskatchewan on Saturday, February 9, 2019.

The event will be a four-day hockey festival beginning Wednesday, February 6, 2019 and culminating in the main event, a 12.5-hour broadcast on Sportsnet. Ron MacLean will once again perform hosting duties while Don Cherry will be on-site for Coach’s Corner.

Swift Current has played a strong role in the hockey fabric of Saskatchewan and Canada as a whole. The Western Hockey League’s Swift Current Broncos recently captured the Ed Chynoweth Cup as the WHL Champions from the 2017-18 season and made their third appearance at the Mastercard Memorial Cup.

The Broncos have also appeared at the Mastercard Memorial Cup in 1989 and 1993 as the WHL Champions, winning the tournament in their first appearance. Among the five Saskatchewan teams in the WHL, the Broncos have claimed the three most-recent WHL Championships among the group.

The festivities will also pay homage on the 30-year anniversary of the team’s 1989 Memorial Cup victory, with events that include a celebratory alumni game. Broncos alumni Bryan Trottier is expected to be on-hand for the festivities with other WHL Alumni including Wendel Clark, Lanny McDonald, and Darcy Tucker.

Swift Current is also home to the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame, where numerous WHL Alumni from the prairie province have been immortalized for their contributions to the sport.

A WHL regular season game between the Swift Current Broncos and Saskatoon Blades will also take place, serving as a culmination to the four-day event and Saturday’s day-long festivities.
