Broncos take care of business, dominate Oil Kings 6-1
The Swift Current Broncos concluded a three-a-three weekend set with an outstanding display on both ends of the ice to dismiss the Edmonton Oil Kings by a score of 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Place.
Swift Current’s power play entered Sunday’s game number one in the WHL and it didn’t disappoint as their first goal was courtesy of a Broncos power play. Matteo Gennaro redirected a low pass from Aleksi Heponiemi by former Broncos goaltender Travis Child to give Swift Current a 1-0 lead.
24 seconds later, Broncos forward Kole Gable drove to the front of net and went top shelf for his second of the year as well as it being the second Swift Current goal. Kaden Elder skated down the right wing and attempted a centering ice pass that bounced off Gennaro’s skate right to the tape of Gable, who deposited the puck home.
The second period was all Swift Current as they outscored the Oil Kings three goals to none. Calgary Flames prospect Glenn Gawdin slammed in his 27th of the season from in close to extend his goal scoring streak to seven straight games. Artyom Minulin and Heponiemi earned assists on the play.
Gawdin then netted his second of the day when a loose puck found the tape of his stick within a few feet of the Oil Kings crease and he went top shelf on Child to make it a 4-0 score.
Before the period came to an end, Broncos defenceman Colby Sissons increased the Swift Current lead to 5-0 after gathering his own initial blocked shot and wiring again from the left boards.
The Broncos power play clicked again for a third time in the final period as rookie forward Quinton Waitzner potted his first career WHL goal with Mackenzie Wight and Ethan Regnier gathering assists.
Oil Kings forward Colton Kehler would score late to break the shutout bid but Swift Current goaltender Logan Flodell was consistent all game long, tallying 42 saves to earn his 18th victory of the season.
Swift Current was outshot by a 43-30 margin in the win but their power play was terrific, executing three times on four chances while limiting Edmonton to one goal on six tries.
The Broncos now make the long trip home and will return to the ice on Tuesday, December 12th when they host the Prince Albert Raiders at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm CT.
