Broncos Suffer Tough Overtime Loss to Silvertips 3-2
The Swift Current Broncos welcomed the U.S. Division leading Everett Silvertips to town for their one and only meeting of the season on Saturday night at the Credit Union i-Plex. It was a dandy as the game proved to be a hard-fought challenging battle that had toughness and players fighting for every inch of space but the Everett Silvertips skated away with a 3-2 win in overtime.
Team captain Glenn Gawdin sent the crowd of 2,367 up on their feet after firing in his 20th of the season by the blocker side of Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart to place Swift Current in a 1-0 advantage.
The Silvertips outshot the Broncos 13-8 in the frame but the Broncos held their one goal margin heading to the second period.
Swift Current displayed an effective offensive game plan in the second period, throwing 17 shots on goal but could not double their lead. Instead, Silvertips captain Noah Juulsen netted the tying goal at the 13:54 mark of the second on a power play opportunity.
With a 1-1 score in the third period, Broncos goaltender Taz Burman went toe-to-toe with the Tips Hart as they stopped chance after chance. The tie would be broken with less than eight minutes in regulation as Devon Skoleski roofed a shot by the blocker hand of Burman to make the score 2-1 Everett.
The Broncos pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker with 1:40 remaining and were rewarded quickly. Gawdin tipped in a Max Lajoie shot to tie this epic affair 2-2 with everyone in attendance on their feet.
In overtime, a controversial finish saw the Silvertips Eetu Tuulola net the overtime winner off the post and in to deliver the Broncos a devastating 3-2 loss.
Shots on goal favoured Everett 33-29. Swift Current finished the evening 0/4 on the power play while Everett went 1/3 on the night.
The Broncos are packing their bags as they head east for a three-game road trip that begins Friday, February 24th with a date against the Regina Pats.
