Broncos Grind Out a 3-2 Win in Brandon
The Swift Current Broncos made the trip out east to Brandon, Manitoba to take on East Division rival, the Brandon Wheat Kings to close out a three-in-three weekend set on Sunday afternoon.
Broncos’ blue liner Colby Sissons recorded two points (1g-1a) and goaltender Travis Child made 21 saves to guide the Swift Current Broncos to a 3-2 victory.
The Broncos got off to a rapid start once again as Colby Sissons scored on the power play at the 3:02 mark of the first period to give Swift Current a 1-0 edge.
Offence from the blue line continued as Kade Jensen’s wrist shot from the point made it’s way through a maze of legs to increase the Broncos lead to 2-0. Both goals from Sissons and Jensen marked their first goals of the season. The Broncos dominated the opening period, outshooting the Wheat Kings 15-6.
Cole Reinhardt got the Wheat Kings on the board in the second period after his shot deflected off several skates near the Bronco cage and found its way in to make the score 2-1 for Swift Current.
However, the Broncos responded with some terrific passing by Cole Johnson and Lane Pederson as they set up Glenn Gawdin for his second goal of the season. Pederson completed a backwards pass to Gawdin in the high slot who one-timed his shot by Wheat Kings’ goaltender Logan Thompson to restore the Broncos two-goal lead.
The Wheat Kings pressed to get back in the game and were rewarded late with a goal from Tyler Coulter with a little over two minutes to go in the third period but the Broncos held on for the 3-2 victory.
The Broncos improve their record to 3-2-0-0 on the season with all three victories coming on the road.
Swift Current finished 1/3 on the power play and held Brandon scoreless on five power play chances while outshooting the Wheat Kings 30-23.
The Broncos return home to face the Portland Winterhawks on Tuesday, October 4th at the Credit Union I-Plex at 7:00pm.
