Broncos drop close match to Pats in Game 2
Game 2 between the Swift Current Broncos and the Regina Pats took place at a packed Innovation Credit Union i-Plex on Saturday night and it was a close tight-checked contest throughout the duration of the game. This time it was the Pats that prevailed as the Broncos were narrowly edged by a 2-1 margin.
Pats forward Cameron Hebig broke Stuart Skinner’s shutout streak at 69 minutes and 46 seconds by scoring 9:46 into the first period. The 21-year-old took a little cross ice pass from Matt Bradley and snuck it in five-hole to make it 1-0 Pats.
The contest demonstrated high physical play between both clubs as body checks were committed by both squads throughout the first and second periods. The Broncos received two power play opportunities in the middle frame but couldn’t connect as Pats netminder Ryan Kubic made some key saves.
Shots on goal were relatively even, being 24-22 in favour of Swift Current through 40 minutes of action.
On a Regina man advantage four minutes into the third, the Pats worked the puck around as Sam Steel passed the puck from right to left to Hebig, setting up his second of the night and sending the Broncos to a 2-0 deficit.
Broncos forward Kaden Elder would get his team on the board, potting his first of the playoffs after receiving a tape-to-tape centering ice pass from Max Patterson who was stationed behind the Pats goal.
Swift Current got a late power play chance and pulled Skinner for the extra attacker but the Pats nursed the one-goal lead and held on for the 2-1 victory. The Round One series is tied 1-1.
Shots on goal were 33-32 in favour of Swift Current. The Pats power play unit went 1/5 while the Broncos struggled, going 0/7.
The best-of-seven series now shifts over to the Brandt Centre in Regina for Games 3 and 4 with the first being scheduled for Monday, March 26th. Puck drop is at 7:00pm MT.
