Broncos Dismantle Raiders, Earn 5-2 Victory
The Swift Current Broncos made Head Coach Manny Viveiros’ return to Prince Albert a memorable one as his club picked up its second straight win with a 5-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night.
The Raiders opened the scoring 4:45 into the first period as Simon Stransky netted his third goal of the season to give Prince Albert a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the frame, the Broncos answered the call as import defenceman Artyom Minulin took a nice backdoor feed from Calvin Spencer and tucked in a low shot by the sprawling pad of Raiders’ goaltender Ian Scott to tie the game at 1-1. The Broncos then took advantage of a two-on-one rush while shorthanded as Tyler Steenbergen received a cross-ice pass from Lane Pederson and made no mistake to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead. Swift Current dominated the period with 14 shots on goal compared to the Raiders’ eight.
Austin Glover tied the game for Prince Albert at the 7:29 mark of the second period when the two clubs were skating four-on-four due to coincidental minors.
The Broncos kept up the pressure in the latter portion of the period and the hard work paid off. In his first game since returning from St.Louis Blues training camp, forward Glenn Gawdin tucked in a rebound opportunity to restore the Broncos one goal cushion heading into the final period.
Arthur Miller provided insurance for the Broncos late in the third period after a Raider turnover resulted in a mini breakaway for Miller. The 19-year-old native of Regina, Saskatchewan went forehand-backhand to extend the Broncos lead to 4-2.
Lane Pederson potted an empty netter with one second left in play to pick up his third point of the night (1g-2a) and secure the Broncos 5-2 win. Travis Child was once again steady in the Broncos’ cage, stopping 21 shots.
Swift Current outshot Prince Albert 35-23. Both clubs combined to go 0/7 on the power play with the Raiders going 0/3 and the Broncos 0/4.
With the victory, the Broncos improve their record to 2-1-0-0 on the season and return home to face the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday, October 1st at the Credit Union I-Plex. The Broncos will honour athletic trainer Jamie ‘Butter’ LeBlanc in a special pre game ceremony as he is set to be behind the bench for his 1000th CHL game. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm.
