Broncos dealt heartbreaker in triple overtime
Game Six had the makings of a drama as it was a matchup full of ups and downs along with intensity and a tragic ending. It took over 100 minutes of hockey to be played before a winner was determined and sadly for the Broncos, the Warriors escaped with a 3-2 overtime win to stave off elimination and force a Game 7.
Swift Current’s dynamic power play went to work at the 13:43 mark of the second period when Matteo Gennaro pocketed his seventh of the postseason. The Broncos were all over the Warriors as they held a 28-9 shots on goal margin through 40 minutes.
Broncos forward Tyler Steenbergen got himself in good position in front of the Warriors net and one-timed in his ninth when he received a smooth centering pass from linemate Glenn Gawdin who was skating out from behind the Warriors cage.
Moose Jaw refused to quit as defenceman Jett Woo scored off a faceoff play. Brett Howden won a draw in Broncos territory directly back to Woo and that was followed by the 2000-born blue liner releasing a wrist shot through traffic and by Broncos goaltender Stuart Skinner.
Halfway through the third, Howden had a Kale Clague wrist shot go off him and in to tie the game 2-2.
For the third time throughout this crazy Round Two series, overtime was needed to determine a winner.
The Broncos pumped 16 shots on goal in the first overtime session, including a few scoring chances on a power play opportunity but both teams went to double overtime.
Goaltenders continued to shine as both Skinner and the Warriors’ Brody Willms each made nine saves to keep their teams in it and force triple overtime.
Moose Jaw’s Jayden Halbgewachs scored 1:14 into the sixth period of action on a Warriors power play to end the marathon tilt.
Shots on goal were 60-38 in favour of Swift Current. The Broncos power play unit went 1/4 while the Warriors finished 1/3 on the man advantage.
Game 7 is slated for Monday, April 16th at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw with puck drop set for 7:00pm.
