Boston Pizza Recap: Gould-en Goal: Broncos Earn Overtime Victory Against Hurricanes
Lethbridge, Alta. – A wild contest in Lethbridge on Wednesday night ended in a 7-6 overtime win for the Swift Current Broncos over the Hurricanes as both teams returned from the Christmas Break.
The Broncos opened the scoring just a minute into the hockey game, thanks to Josh Filmon’s 13th of the season, and after that, the floodgates opened.
Neither team had more than a one goal lead, and there were a total of five different lead changes in the contest. The Broncos also trailed 3-2 after one, and 5-4 after two periods. Connor Hvidston, Maddix McCagherty and Luke Mistelbacher also scored for the Broncos in the first 40 minutes. For the Hurricanes, it was Will Sharpe scoring twice, Miguel Marques, Logan McCutcheon, and Brayden Edwards also joining in.
In the third, the Broncos had some excellent looks to beat Koen Cleaver in the Lethbridge net, and they finally did as Brady Birnie fired a seeing eye shot through traffic to beat Cleaver and tie the game. Although Marques would score again for Lethbridge to restore the lead with just under half the period remaining. Birnie continued hauling the Broncos forward as he scored again with just over five minutes to play.
That led to overtime as a couple chances from both clubs were unsuccessful until Rylan Gould was patient and found some space before beating Cleaver short side to win it for the Broncos who are now 17-4-1-2.
The Bronco powerplay was a perfect 1-for-1 on the night, but the penalty kill was 0-for-2.
The Broncos are back in action on Friday as they visit the Medicine Hat Tigers.
