Boston Pizza Recap: Broncos drop physical game in Moose Jaw
Moose Jaw, Sask. – The Swift Current Broncos (11-13-2-1) recovered from a slow start against the Moose Jaw Warriors (13-13-1-1) Saturday night, but couldn’t complete the comeback falling 4-2 at Mosaic Place.
Moose Jaw opened the scoring 5:27 into the game. After Braeden Lewis blocked a wraparound attempt, the puck came to the front of the goal for Thomas Tien and he shoveled it through traffic to give the Warriors the early lead.
The Warriors then added to their lead as a bouncing puck resulted in a breakaway for Jagger Firkus who beat Isaac Poulter over the glove 13:02 into the first.
The Broncos had just four shots on net in the opening period, though they were quality chances including a 2-on-1 where Lewis was stopped by the blocker of Carl Tetachuk.
Moose Jaw lead 2-0 after one with the shots 10-4 in their favour.
Caleb Wyrostok was given a five-minute cross checking major early in the second period and the Warriors added to their lead just 14 seconds into the power play. Brayden Yager fired a shot in from the left circle to push Moose Jaw ahead 3-0.
Shortly after the goal Poulter was run into as Firkus and Sam McGInley collided in front of the net. Poulter eventually left game and was replaced by Reid Dyck 3:02 into the second period.
The Warriors took a too-many men on the ice penalty late in the five-minute power play, and when 4-on-4 ended the Broncos scored on the short power play.
Owen Pickering sent the puck to the crease from the right circle and Cole Nagy, playing his 100th career WHL game, knocked in the rebound to cut the Warriors lead to 3-1 7:57 into the second period.
The goal seemed to rejuvenate the Broncos offence as they started generating more offence towards Tetachuk after the goal. A late power play for the Broncos carried over into the third period where they would cut the lead to one.
From the left circle, Mathew Ward slid the puck to Josh Filmon in the slot who took a one timer that was blocked in front. Tetachuk didn’t know where the puck was and stood up to look for it, but it was directly in front of him. Nagy swept it into the net for his second power play goal of the game, cutting Moose Jaw’s lead to one just 23 seconds into the period.
The Broncos had another power play a minute after the goal but couldn’t capitalize to pull even.
The Warriors thought they iced the game with a late goal, but the Broncos challenged for a potential offside. After the review, the goal was taken back keeping the score 3-2 with 2:31 remaining.
The Broncos pulled Dyck for the extra attacker looking for the equalizer, but Ryder Korczak would hit the empty net from his own zone to seal the 4-2 final score.
The Broncos continue their four-game road trip on Wednesday when they head to Red Deer to face the Rebels (17-9-1-1) on Wednesday.
