Mat Barrett: The New Voice of The Broncos & Face of Community Engagement
The Swift Current Broncos are excited to announce that Mat Barrett has been hired as the team’s Community Relations Manager and official play-by-play voice for the Broncos Hockey Broadcast.
The Broncos have gone through a rigorous hiring process to find the next person to bring Broncos games to the airwaves for fans and to be the face of the teams’ community engagement activities. The organization is confident that Barrett is going to be a great fit for the team and the community.
“We are very pleased to add Mat to the Bronco family,” said General Manager, Chad Leslie. “Mat is a young, energetic, community-minded guy that has had some valuable experience working at the Junior A level to this point. I feel he will bring some more content to our social media platforms and do a great job getting our players integrated with our corporate partners and fans. We are very excited to welcome Mat and his girlfriend Samantha to Swift Current.”
Barrett has most recently held the position as the voice of the Melfort Mustangs in the SJHL for the last six seasons, and was the Manager of Marketing, Business, and Office Administration for the last two seasons, on top of his play-by-play duties. Originally, Barrett came to Melfort to work at the radio station (105 CJVR & CK750) as a News & Sports Reporter, along with play-by-play for the Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks. He’s called a number of important games including two SJHL Finals, one Anavet cup, and countless exciting overtime finishes.
Prior to his time with the Mustangs, the Edmonton, Alta. product graduated from Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alta. with a diploma in Broadcasting. In his two years there, Barrett called games for the Mount Royal Cougars men’s and women’s hockey teams, including the 2017 Crowchild Classic at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
“Mat calls the game with enthusiasm and accuracy. His love of hockey and broadcasting is evident in his calls,” said long-time voice of the Red Deer Rebels, and current radio voice of the Edmonton Oilers, Cam Moon. “Mat also has a strong understanding of a junior hockey team’s importance in a Western Canadian city. He’s going to do a tremendous job.”
Barrett will begin his role as the voice of the Broncos broadcast, as an integral part of the organization’s public communication activities, and as the manager of community relations in early August.
“I am extremely excited to be joining the Broncos organization and to have taken the next step in my broadcasting career. I know how important the Broncos are to the people of Swift Current and I can’t wait to get down there and immerse myself in the community. It’s certainly going to be a lot of fun on and off the air.”
