Broncos perfect start comes to a hault
The Swift Current Broncos perfect start to the 2017-18 season came to an end on Saturday night as they let one slip away versus the Edmonton Oil Kings by a score of 4-3.
Glenn Gawdin opened the scoring for the Broncos as he lifted one by former Swift Current goaltender Travis Child to give his club a 1-0 edge 13:33 into the game.
Oil Kings forward Brett Kemp took advantage of a Broncos miscue and scored on a shorthanded breakaway attempt with 13 seconds left in the frame to knot it up at one goal apiece.
The Broncos trio of Gawdin, Aleksi Heponiemi and Tyler Steenbergen made the score sheet again as they scored the go-ahead goal 13 minutes into the middle frame to make it a 2-1 game with Heponiemi getting the goal.
New Jersey Devils prospect blasted a hard one-timer by Child on a Broncos power play, pushing the lead to 3-1.
Swift Current maintained the two-goal lead halfway through the third period but an interference penalty by Max Patterson led to Edmonton’s second goal.
Then Kobe Mohr fired a hard shot from the slot that rain bowed its way over Joel Hofer and the puck trickled by him to tie it 3-3.
Kemp completed the comeback as he made a move around Broncos blue liner Dom Schmiemann and roofed one by Hofer with 19 seconds left in regulation to send the Broncos to a gut wrenching 4-3 defeat.
Shots on goal were 35-22 in favour of Edmonton. Swift Current went 1/4 on the power play while Edmonton finished 1/3 on their man advantages.
Swift Current returns to action next Friday, October 20th as they hit the road for a mini two-game road trip and will meet the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the ENMAX Centre.
