Blades acquire 2006-born netminder McCallum from Tigers
Saskatoon, SK – The Saskatoon Blades have acquired 2006-born netminder Ethan McCallum from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for two WHL Prospect Draft picks. The picks include Saskatoon’s 2027 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2028 fourth-round selection.
“Ethan is a big goalie with a solid pedigree as a top 40 pick in the WHL Draft and attending Hockey Canada camp in 2023,” said Blades general manager, Colin Priestner.
The Brandon, MB native is in his second WHL season. In 28 career appearances, McCallum has a 12-9-1-0 record, 3.20 goals against average (GAA), and a .879 save percentage (SV%). The towering 6-foot-4 goalie helped the Tigers to the playoffs last season alongside Zach Zahara and Evan May, going 11-8-1-0 in 23 games. McCallum faced rubber in three playoff games for the Tigers last spring, going 0-2-1 with a 3.53 GAA and a .886 SV%.
The 18-year-old netminder is 1-1-0-0 through five appearances this season with a 4.09 GAA and a .835 SV%.
“Our goalie coach, Jeff Harvey, has long been a fan of his game and feels there’s a lot of upside that is untapped with Ethan,” said Priestner, “Jeff has a tremendous track record developing goalies for us, so it’s something we felt would really strengthen our goaltending depth chart.”
The Blades want to welcome the McCallum family to Blade City and look forward to working with Ethan on continuing his development in the WHL.
