OHL 20 in 20 Futures Watch: Barrie Colts
Some pretty good defencemen have come through Barrie over the years and the Colts are pretty excited about the latest edition to their blue line.
Don Mills Flyers standout Brandt Clarke was chosen with the fourth overall pick, making him the highest defenceman taken in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. Clarke’s 113 points (35-78–113) this past season speak for themselves. He also set a new OHL Cup record for defencemen, recording 11 points (2-9–11) over seven games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-13. If that wasn’t enough, Clarke finished tied for the OHL Gold Cup scoring lead (3-5–8), becoming the first defenceman to do so since Evan Bouchard back in 2015.
The younger brother of Ottawa 67’s forward Graeme Clarke, the 6-foot-1 defender committed to the Colts on May 16th and is expected to be an impactful addition to their blue line.
Following Clarke, the Colts selected offensively gifted Toronto Nationals forward Ryan Del Monte at 24th overall. The 5-foot-10 centreman put up 69 points (24-45–69) over 42 contests this past season but missed the 2019 OHL Cup with an injury.
Big 6-foot-3 Mississauga Senators forward Jacob Frasca was Barrie’s third round (45th overall) choice. The Caledon, Ont. recently committed to the Colts on July 4th. He is the younger brother of Windsor Spitfires forward Jordan Frasca.
The Colts went with size in the fifth round, taking 6-foot-4 North York Rangers left-winger Vladislav Dvurechenskii at 90th overall before selection 6-foot-3 Detroit Honeybaked goaltender Ansel Holt at 92nd.
Sixth round (107th overall) pick Trey Zagrzebski came by way of Stevens Point Area Senior High School in Wisconsin and announced his commitment to the club back on May 16th. The Colts followed up by selecting defenceman Kai Greaves of the Cambridge Hawks one pick later. He is the younger brother of current Barrie netminder Jet Greaves.
