O’Sullivan Named OHL Rookie of the Year
The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Patrick O’Sullivan of the Mississauga IceDogs is the 2001-02 Emms Family Award winner as the OHL Rookie of the Year.
O’Sullivan led all OHL rookies and the IceDogs in scoring this season with 34 goals and 58 assists for 92 points in 68 games. The first overall pick in the 2001 OHL Priority Selection also participated in the 2002 Hershey Cup CHL All-Star Series against the QMJHL in Ottawa in January.
O’Sullivan recorded points in 51 games, including four point games on four occasions and a five point game against the Brampton Battalion on March 1. He posted eight multiple goal games, including his first career hat trick on March 8 in Ottawa.
The Emms Family Award is presented annually to the top first year player as selected by OHL general managers. Teams were not permitted to vote for a player from their own hockey club. Players received five points for a first place vote, three points for a second place vote and one point for a third place vote.
O’Sullivan received 72 points in the voting, while runner-up Nathan Horton of the Oshawa Generals received 56 points and Corey Perry of the London Knights finished third with 18 points.
Former winners of the Emms Family Award include Wayne Gretzky (Sault Ste. Marie, 1977-78), Joe Thornton (Sault Ste. Marie, 1995-96) and Owen Nolan (Cornwall, 1988-89). Rick Nash of the London Knights won the award last season.
