2016 OHL Eastern Conference Championship Series Schedule
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the schedule for the 2016 OHL Eastern Conference Championship Series for the Bobby Orr Trophy between the Barrie Colts and the Niagara IceDogs beginning next Thursday night, April 21, in Barrie.
The third round series features two of the top four teams in the OHL’s Eastern Conference standings during the 2015-16 regular season. The second place Colts earned their second straight Central Division title with 89 points from a 43-22-0-3 record, while the fourth place IceDogs posted a 35-26-4-3 for 77 points.
The Colts advanced to the Eastern Conference Championship Series with a 4-0 series win over the North Bay Battalion ending with a 6-0 victory on Thursday night. The IceDogs also advanced by way of a 4-0 series win in the second round eliminating the first place Kingston Frontenacs with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday.
Four of the of six head-to-head regular season matchups during the 2015-16 campaign were won by the Colts including one win by shootout. This marks just the second ever meeting between the Colts and the IceDogs in OHL playoff history but first since the IceDogs relocated to St. Catharines. In the 2004 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals the Mississauga IceDogs prevailed 4-3 over the Colts.
The Eastern Conference Champion receives the Bobby Orr Trophy named in honour of the Hockey Hall of Fame member who played four OHL seasons with the Oshawa Generals from 1962-66. Since the two conference division in 1999, the Colts are seeking their fifth Eastern Conference title with previous wins in 2013, 2010, 2002, and 2000. The IceDogs hoisted the trophy in 2012, as well as 2004 when the franchise was located in Mississauga.
