New records forged during 2015-16 season
The 2016 OHL Playoffs are well underway, but it’s always fun to take a look back at the season that was and review the new records and milestones written into the OHL history books.
The Erie Otters claimed the Hamilton Spectator Trophy with a record of 52-15-1-0, taking the honours for the second time in franchise history while also becoming the first team in OHL history to win at least 50 games in three straight seasons.
The Otters saw a number of individual milestones fall this past season as goaltender Devin Williams became the new career leader in wins (106) and games played (175) while becoming the fifth netminder in OHL history to win 100 games.
Elsewhere in the Western Conference the Sarnia Sting set new franchise marks in wins (42) and points (91), putting together their best regular season performance to date to claim a West Division title for the first time since 2004.
The Kingston Frontenacs set similar records atop the Eastern Conference, claiming their first East Division title since 1995 while setting new marks for wins (46), points (97) and goals against (189).
On an individual level, North Bay Battalion veterans Mike Amadio and Jake Smith re-wrote franchise records as Amadio became the first Troops player to score 50 goals in a season, also setting a new single-game mark of five goals. Smith set new career and single-season marks for wins in the crease, collecting 30 victories in his overage campaign.
The Barrie Colts were another Central Division club that saw franchise milestones eclipsed as OHL leading scorer Kevin Labanc set new single-season benchmarks for points (127) and assists (88). The Colts also set a new OHL record, scoring 28 shorthanded goals to surpass the prior mark of 27 they’d set in 2009-10.
A pair of well-established offensive producers in Michael Dal Colle of the Kingston Frontenacs and Mitchell Marner of the London Knights each hit the 300-point mark on their careers, joining an elite class of OHL scorers to accomplish the impressive feat.
These records are just a few of the many accomplishments by teams and players across the OHL throughout the 2015-16 season.
