Monday Highlights: Filling the net on Family Day

 

GUELPH 5, FLINT 4 – OT
Edmonton Oilers prospect Dmitri Samorukov (5) scored 1:13 into overtime as the Guelph Storm recovered from a late lapse to defeat visiting Flint 5-4. Firebirds forward Cody Morgan (7, 8, 9) scored his first OHL hat-trick in the loss, tying the score at four midway through the third period as Flint earned a point. Isaac Ratcliffe (37), Cedric Ralph (15), Liam Hawel (32) and Domenico Commisso (9) found the scoresheet for Guelph while Nate Schnarr picked up a pair of assists. Eric Uba (19) joined Morgan in the goal scoring department for Flint while Emanuel Vella turned aside 41 shots as the Firebirds were outshot 46-34. Guelph gets back in the win column after a pair of losses, improving to 30-16-6-4 for fourth place in the Western Conference. Flint moves out of last place in the OHL, owning an 11-43-5-0 record.

OSHAWA 3, SUDBURY 2 – SO
OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week Nando Eggenberger scored the shootout winner while Kyle Keyser stopped three of the four shooters he faced as the Oshawa Generals edged visiting Sudbury 3-2. Eggenberger (22) and Brett Neumann (38) scored Oshawa goals as the Generals outshot the Wolves 37-26, stretching their current winning streak to seven games. Anthony Salinitri joined Eggenberger with a shootout goal while Keyser made 24 saves on the afternoon. Sudbury’s Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was also steady, making 35 saves of his own behind Sudbury goals from Darian Pilon (14) and Quinton Byfield (22). The Generals clinch a playoff spot, stretching their lead to over Sudbury to three points for third place in the Eastern Conference with a 37-18-3-0 record. Sudbury falls to 35-17-2-2.

SARNIA 7, SAGINAW 6 – SO
The Sarnia Sting let a 5-2 lead slip away but recovered in a shootout as Franco Sproviero and Jacob Perreault scored goals in a 7-6 win over visiting Saginaw. Sproviero (18, 19) also scored twice on the afternoon while Hugo Leufvenius (32), Ashton Reesor (2), Ryan McGregor (20) and Sean Josling (16) joined him in the scoring department. Josling finished the game with a goal and three helpers while McGregor had a goal and two assists. Brady Gilmour (11), Reagan O’Grady (8), Jake Goldowski (10), Cole Perfetti (25), Blade Jenkins (21) and Justin Murray (12) scored Spirit goals, with Murray tying the score at six with 4:40 left in the third period. Saginaw outshot Sarnia 42-37 but the Sting took the extra point, snapping a four game slide. Sarnia improves to 24-27-5-2 for seventh in the Western Conference while Saginaw falls to 36-15-2-3, two points back of first place Sault Ste. Marie in the West Division.

MISSISSAUGA 9, LONDON 4
The Mississauga Steelheads outgunned the visiting London Knights as former London Jr. Knight Aidan Prueter (9, 10) scored a pair of goals in a 9-4 victory. London’s Kevin Hancock (44, 45) opened the scoring with a pair of goals before Mississauga stormed back with four in a row. London pulled to within a goal with five minutes left in the second period but the Trout once again took over, finishing the game with four unanswered. Alan Lyszczarczyk (33), Cole Scwhindt (15), Cole Carter (33), Nick Isaacson (11), Nick McHugh (12), Keean Washkurak (13) and Duncan Penman (2) added Mississauga goals while Thomas Harley picked up a pair of assists and Jacob Ingham provided 39 saves for the win. The Trout earn their sixth straight victory despite being outshot 43-35. Connor McMichael (33) and Liam Foudy (31) added London goals as the Knights gave up four or more for a third straight game. The Steelheads improve to 29-21-5-2 for fifth in the Eastern Conference while London sits at 39-10-6-1 atop the Western Conference.

HAMILTON 7, BARRIE 5
Arthur Kaliyev (46, 47) continued his march to 50, scoring the game winner in a 7-5 Hamilton Bulldogs victory over visiting Barrie. Kaliyev scored his 10th and 11th goals of the month while adding an assist to give him 91 points on the season. Arizona Coyotes prospect Jan Jenik (8) also got involved with a goal and two helpers while Isaac Nurse (11, 12) also scored twice and Jake Gravelle (3) and Liam Van Loon (7) added singles. Rookie forward Avery Hayes had three assists on the afternoon as the Bulldogs outshot the Colts 33-28. Barrie’s power play went 3-for-6 in the loss as Ben Hawerchuk (23, 24) scored twice before Ryan Suzuki (19), Tyler Tucker (9) and Jack York (6) also found the back of the net. The Bulldogs hold a four point lead over seventh place North Bay in the Eastern Conference sporting a 27-26-3-2 record. Barrie falls to 23-29-3-1, three points back of Peterborough for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

KITCHENER 3, KINGSTON 2
Jonathan Yantsis (39), Donovan Sebrango (5) and Joseph Garreffa (21) scored goals as the Kitchener Rangers edged the Kingston Frontenacs 3-2 on the road. The Rangers outshot the Fronts 30-19 as Greg Meireles had a pair of assists on the afternoon and Luke Richardson made 17 saves. Nick Wong (12) and Tyler Burnie (6) scored Kingston goals while Brendan Bonello made 27 saves in goal. Kitchener improves to 27-25-3-1, one point back of fifth place Owen Sound in the Western Conference. Kingston falls to 12-44-1-1 after a 15th straight loss.

NIAGARA 5, PETERBOROUGH 2
The Niagara IceDogs scored four times in the first period enroute to a 5-2 victory in Peterborough, clinching an Eastern Conference playoff spot in the process. 2019 NHL Draft prospect Philip Tomasino (28, 29) continued a productive weekend with a pair of goals while Daniel Bukac (3), Ben Jones (34) and Jason Robertson (42) also found the back of the net. Stephen Dhillon stopped 30 of 32 shots that came his way as Peterborough goals came off the sticks of Cameron Butler (16) and Brady Hinz (15). Niagara outshot Peterborough 36-32, improving to 34-15-7-0 while also reclaiming first place in the Central Division. The Petes suffer a fourth straight loss, falling to 25-28-1-2.

WINDSOR 2, OWEN SOUND 1
Sophomore blueliner Nathan Staios (6) scored the game winner with 1:50 remaining as the Windsor Spitfires edged visiting Owen Sound 2-1. Colton Incze turned in a 24-save performance while Chris Playfair (10) also scored for the Spits in their third straight win. Sergey Popov (5) provided Owen Sound’s lone goal while netminder Mack Guzda stopped 31 of 33. The Attack drops a third straight contest to fall to 27-25-3-2. Windsor improves to 24-28-3-3 and holds a five point lead on the Western Conference’s last playoff spot.

OTTAWA 6, NORTH BAY 3
Sasha Chmelevski (25, 26, 27, 28, 29) had a day he won’t soon forget, scoring five times as the Ottawa 67’s defeated visiting North Bay 6-3. Chmelevski came one goal away from tying a 67’s franchise record while Tye Felhaber (55) rounded out Ottawa’s scoring. Chmelevski had nine shots on goal and went 12-for-17 in the faceoff circle, getting help from Sam Bitten who picked up three assists and Lucas Chiodo who had a pair of his own. The 67’s outshot the Troops 51-11 as Brandon Coe (15), Luke Moncada (6) and Harrison Caines (7) provided Battalion goals. Ottawa wins a fifth straight contest to improve to 44-9-3-2. North Bay falls to 25-26-3-2 for seventh in the Eastern Conference.
