Friday Highlights: Hounds sprint back from late deficit on Howdeshell’s pair

Down 3-0 midway through the second period, the Soo Greyhounds struck for four unanswered to come back and defeat the visiting Guelph Storm 4-3 in overtime. Overage winger Keeghan Howdeshell (11, 12) tied the game with 40 seconds left before netting the overtime winner 48 seconds into the extra frame as the Hounds won their ninth game in the last 10 outings. Mac Hollowell (5) and Ryan Roth (6) also tallied while Cole MacKay picked up a pair of assists. Liam Hawel (8), Cam Hillis (3) and Keegan Stevenson (5) scored for the Storm as they were outshot 29-22. The Hounds improve to a West Division-leading 12-3-3-0 mark while Guelph falls to 9-4-3-0 atop the Midwest Division.

Kingston native Chris Paquette (9, 10) scored twice, leading the Peterborough Petes to a 4-3 road win over the Frontenacs. Winnipeg Jets prospect Declan Chisholm picked up a pair of assists while newcomer Max Grondin (2) and Cole Fraser (3) also tallied. Brett Neumann (9), Matt Hotchkiss (3) and Luke Drewitt (1) all scored for the Frontenacs as they were outshot 31-27. Peterborough outshot Kingston 31-27 as Hunter Jones got the win between the pipes. The Petes improve to 11-7-0-0 while Kingston drops a third straight decision to fall to 4-12-1-0.

The Owen Sound Attack came back from down 4-3 to defeat the Oshawa Generals 6-4 on the road. Owen Sound scored three times in the final half of the third period as Nick Suzuki (11) netted the game winner with 3:17 to go. Suzuki had a goal and two assists while linemate Kevin Hancock (11, 12) finished with two goals and two assists. Los Angeles Kings prospect Aidan Dudas (9, 10) earned first star honours with two goals and an assist while Zachary Roberts (1) also found the back of the net. Daylon Groulx and Maksim Sushko both had a pair of assists while Andrew MacLean picked up a win in relief, stopping all three shots he faced after a mid-third period goaltending change. Nando Eggenberger (6), William Ennis (1), Jack Studnicka (7) and Ian Blacker (1) scored Oshawa goals as the Generals fell to 8-6-2-0. Owen Sound climbs to 9-6-0-1.

Rookie netminder Kari Piiroinen stopped all 34 shots he faced as the Windsor Spitfires blanked the Kitchener Rangers 3-0 on the road. Curtis Douglas (5), Cody Morgan (1) and Tyler Angle (5) scored Windsor goals as they won despite being outshot 34-27. The Spits rebound from a 1-0 loss at home on Thursday, improving to 7-9-0-1 behind Piiroinen’s first OHL shutout. Kitchener falls to 7-7-2-0.

The Sudbury Wolves enjoyed a five-goal first period on Rod Schutt jersey retirement night, defeating the visiting Erie Otters 6-1. Peter Stratis (2), Nolan Hutcheson (5), David Levin (8, 9) and Kirill Nizhnikov (4) struck for first period markers following #8’s ascension to the rafters. Darian Pilon (4) tacked on a third period goal for good measure while Shane Bulitka and Drake Pilon both collected two assists. Levin led the way on the scoresheet with two goals and an assist as the Wolves scored six times on just 24 shots. Buffalo Sabres prospect Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 23 of 24, surrendering Erie’s lone goal off the stick of Hayden Fowler (4). Sudbury snaps a three-game losing skid to improve to 9-6-1-0. Erie falls to 7-8-1-0.

Cole Tymkin (8, 9) scored twice while 2019 NHL Draft prospect Connor McMichael (10) had a goal and two assists as the London Knights defeated visiting Flint 6-2. Nathan Dunkley (4), Antonio Stranges (5) and Dalton Duhart (3) tacked on goals while Billy Moskal had three assists as the Knights outshot the Firebirds 41-27. Joseph Raaymakers picked up the win for London with a 25-save effort while Flint’s Luke Cavallin took the loss with 35 to his credit. Ty Dellandrea (5) and Eric Uba (5) scored for Flint as the Birds fell to 0-15-1-0. The Knights have won four of five, improving to 8-4-2-0.

The Niagara IceDogs opened up a 2-0 lead before the Mississauga Steelheads stormed back with four unanswered in a 4-2 home ice win. Florida Panthers prospect Owen Tippett (9, 10) scored twice before Cole Carter (15) scored the game winner 6:33 into the third period. Michael Little (5) tacked on insurance while goaltender Jacob Ingham stopped 37 of the 39 shots he faced. Newcomer Alan Lyszczarczyk and defenceman Ryan Wells both had two helpers for the Trout as they were outshot 39-32. The IceDogs see a five-game winning streak come to an end as Philip Tomasino (3) and Liam Ham (1) both found the twine in front of a 28-save showing from Stephen Dhillon. The IceDogs remain two points up on Mississauga with a 10-5-2-0 record. The Steelheads are 9-5-2-0.
