Four prospects commit to Greyhounds
Sault Ste. Marie, ON – The Soo Greyhounds recently announced that four prospects made commitments to the club over the course of the pre-season. Forwards Cole MacKay, Brett Jacklin and Zack Trott as well as defenceman Phil Caron all competed in exhibition games and have joined the organization for the 2017-18 season.
A fifth round (98th overall) selection by the Hounds this past April, Sault Ste. Marie native Cole MacKay recorded a goal and an assist over three pre-season games in red and white. The 5-foot-10, 181Ib. right-winger spent last season with the ALLIANCE’s Kitchener Rangers Minor Midgets, leading the league in goals with 30 for a team-leading 46 points.
A 10th round (190th overall) selection in 2016, 17-year-old Sudbury, Ont. native Brett Jacklin commits to the Greyhounds after spending the 2016-17 campaign Elliot Lake Wildcats Jr. A club of the NOJHL. The 6-foot-1, 171Ib. Sudbury Wolves Minor Midget graduate recorded 18 goals, eight assists and 26 points in 56 games last season.
Zack Trott is a 17-year-old former 14th round (270th overall) pick by the Greyhounds from the Grey-Bruce Highlanders Minor Midgets in 2016. He was a big point producer in the SCTA that season, recording 49 points (26-23–49) over 36 games and continued to contribute last season, registering 67 points (35-32–67) over 41 games with the Stayner Siskins Jr. C club. A 5-foot-10, 170Ib. native of Honeywood, Ont., Trott recorded four points (3-1–4) over four exhibition games with the Greyhounds.
The Hounds wrapped things up with a free agent commitment during the pre-season as 17-year-old Timmins, Ont. native Phil Caron impressed during training camp. The 5-foot-7, 169Ib. right-hand shot defenceman spent 2016-17 with the Iroquois Falls Eskimos Jr. A club of the NOJHL, recording 41 points (7-34–41) over 53 games. Caron is a graduate of the Vaughan Kings Minor Midget program, collecting 18 points (5-13–18) over 65 games with the club during his minor midget season.
The Greyhounds played to a 1-3-0 record during the pre-season and are now preparing for action on home ice next weekend as they host the Oshawa Generals in their home opener on Saturday, September 23rd followed by a Sunday afternoon matchup against the London Knights on Sunday, September 24th.
