2018 WU17 Hockey Challenge: Day 2 Recap
Day 2 of the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge saw Russia finish-off a victory from Saturday night’s postponed action before Canada White won an overtime thriller and the United States got off on the right foot. Here’s a closer look at Sunday’s action in Saint John and Quispamsis.
CANADA WHITE 5, CANADA BLACK 4 – OT
Connor McClennon (Kootenay ICE) put an end to an all-Canadian overtime thriller at Harbour Station in Saint John, scoring 35 seconds into the extra frame with an assist from Cole Perfetti (Saginaw Spirit ) as Canada White took a 5-4 win over Canada Black. Perfetti led the way with a goal and three assists in the victory while defenceman Jérémie Poirier (Saint John Sea Dogs) scored twice and Théo Rochette (Chicoutimi Saguenéens) also lit the lamp. Quinton Byfield (Sudbury Wolves) scored shorthanded for Canada Black while Will Cuylle (Windsor Spitfires), Josh Lawrence (Saint John Sea Dogs) and Spencer Smith also found the back of the net. Tristan Lennox (Saginaw Spirit) took the win in goal with 27 saves across from Joe Vrbetic (North Bay Battalion) who made 23 saves in defeat.

UNITED STATES 5 – CZECH REPUBLIC 1
The United States pulled away with a three-goal second period to defeat the Czech Republic 5-1. Dylan Peterson, Luke Tuch, Landon Slaggert, Hunter Strand and Matthew Beniers all had goals while goaltender Drew Commesso stopped 14 of 15 as the Americans got off on the right foot. Pavel Novak scored the lone goal for the Czechs while goaltender Nick Malik made 23 saves. The United States outshot the Czech Republic 28-15, holding them to 0-for-8 on the power play.

RUSSIA 4, CANADA RED 2 (Finalized from Saturday)
Marat Khusnutdinov put the cherry on top of a 4-2 Russian win over Team Canada Red, adding goal after play resumed on Saturday morning following a Friday night power outage postponement. The Russians were backstopped by a 29-save effort from goaltender Yaroslav Askarov as Canada Red took the shooting column 31-19. Seth Jarvis (Portland Winterhawks) had a goal and an assist while Payton Mount (Seattle Thunderbirds) scored Canada’s other goal. Iliya Rychkov, Vasili Ponomaryov and Pavel Tyutnev accounted for Russia’s other goals.
