Friday Highlights: Robertson, Nyman connect in Kingston
KINGSTON 3 – ERIE 2 – OT
Dallas Stars prospect Jason Robertson (1, 2) made Opening Night at the Rogers K-Rock Centre one to remember, tying the score with eight minutes to go in the third period before netting the overtime winner in a 3-2 win over the defending OHL champion Erie Otters. Linus Nyman picked up assists on both Robertson goals, feeding the big winger barreling down the middle for the game winner as he beat Erie’s Troy Timpano through the five-hole 1:32 into the extra frame. 2017 first round pick Cody Morgan’s (1) first OHL goal was the Frontenacs’ first of the season. Rookie defenceman Evan Brand and forward Bryan Laureigh each collected their first OHL points with assists on the goal. Both Erie goals came from overage defenceman Owen Headrick (1, 2) while Taylor Raddysh picked up a pair of assists. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jeremy Helvig made 28 saves in goal for the Frontenacs.

SARNIA 4 – GUELPH 3 – SO
Connor Schlichting (1) tied the score with 7:31 left in the third period before the game spilled over into a shootout where Drake Rymsha and Anthony Salinitri sealed the deal for Sarnia. The Sting defeated the Guelph Storm 4-3 on the road as overage goaltender Justin Fazio turned in a 32-save performance. Rymsha (1) and Salinitri (1) each provided goals in regulation while Calgary Flames prospect Adam Ruzicka collected a pair of assists. The Sting won despite being outshot 35-24. St. Louis Blues prospect Alexey Toropchenko (1) scored his first OHL goal and picked up an assist while Liam Hawel (1) and Ryan Merkley (1) also found the scoresheet. The Sting managed to hold the Storm to just 1-for-9 on the power play.

FLINT 5 – KITCHENER 3
2018 NHL Draft prospect Ty Dellandrea (1, 2) scored twice and newly acquired blueliner Nicolas Mattinen had two assists as the Flint Firebirds spoiled the party in Kitchener with a 5-3 victory. Down 3-2 late in the third, the Firebirds scored three times in under two minutes as Fedor Gordeev (1), Dellandrea and Jake Durham (1) secured the win. Sophomore forward Hunter Holmes (1) also scored for Flint while veteran winger Nicholas Caamano had three assists in his return from Dallas Stars training camp. Adam Liska (1), Adam Mascherin (1) and Riley Damiani (1) all scored for the Rangers who were outshot 39-33. The Firebirds went 3-for-9 on the power play to Kitchener’s 2-for-4.

NORTH BAY 5 – BARRIE 2
Luke Burghardt (1, 2) started his North Bay Battalion career off with a bang, leading the Troops to a 5-2 win over the visiting Barrie Colts in their home opener. Fellow ex-Guelph Storm teammate Luke Moncada (1) opened the scoring for North Bay while Daniel Walker (1) and Kyle Potts (1) also found the back of the net. Julian Sime made 22 saves for North Bay in the win while 19-year-old winger Justin Brazeau had a pair of assists. Barrie falls short one night after defeating the Ottawa 67’s 11-2 in their home opener on Thursday. Jaden Peca (1) and Kade Landry (1) provided goals while Christian Propp made 25 saves in the loss.

WINDSOR 5 – LONDON 2
Vancouver Canucks prospect Michael DiPietro was a difference-maker, turning aside 30 shots as the Windsor Spitfires improved to 2-0 with a 5-2 victory in London. Chris Playfair (1) scored the game winner inside the final minute of the second period while Igor Larionov (1), Cole Purboo (1), Tyler Angle (1) and Aaron Luchuk (1) also lit the lamp. Josh Nelson (1) and Adrian Carbonara (1) responded with goals for the Knights. Both teams registered 32 shots on goal while the Spitfires power play was 2-for-4 on the night to London’s 0-for-6 mark.

OSHAWA 8 – SUDBURY 2
Sixteen-year-old rookie Nick Wong (1, 2, 3) recorded the first hat-trick of the 2017-18 OHL season, leading the Oshawa Generals to an 8-2 victory in Sudbury. Boston Bruins prospect Jack Studnicka (1, 2) had a big night of his own, finishing with two goals and two assists while Renars Krastenbergs (1), Kenny Whether (1) and Allan McShane (1) also found the twine and Domenico Commisso picked up three assists. Netminder Kyle Keyser turned aside 36 shots with both Sudbury goals coming off the stick of defenceman Kyle Rhodes. Sudbury outshot Oshawa 38-32 but the Wolves were held to an 0-for-6 mark on the man advantage.

OTTAWA 4 – MISSISSAUGA 3
The Ottawa 67’s rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to come back and dampen the mood on Opening Night in Mississauga with a 4-3 victory. San Jose Sharks prospect Sasha Chmelevski (1) earned first star honours with a goal and an assist while Kody Clark (1), Tye Felhaber (1) and Mathieu Foget (2) also scored. The 67’s rebound from a forgettable 11-2 loss in Barrie on Thursday, getting 30 saves from goaltender Olivier Lafreniere in the process. Ryan McLeod (1, 2) and Albert Michnac scored for the Trout while overage winger Trent Fox had a pair of assists.
