Jake Henderson and Rickard Hugg host first Captain’s Clinic of the season on the RBC School Tour
Kitchener Rangers players Jake Henderson and Rickard Hugg visited Grade 3 students at St. Vincent de Paul School on Monday, November 6th for a Captain’s Clinic on the RBC School Tour.
The Captains Clinic is a program that focuses on the importance of health and physical activity while learning fundamental hockey skills. Students have the opportunity to practice and utilize these skills in a game with their favourite Rangers players. The players explain the importance of each part of the session and how the skills apply to the game.
On Monday, Jake and Rickard enjoyed a game of floor hockey with the students, teaching them some drills and helped the children with their techniques.
“Some of the students weren’t quite sure how to hold their stick,” said Jake. “But that’s what we’re there for. We had a great time showing them how to play, and it looked like they really had fun.”
The Rangers enjoyed a great question and answer session with their new friends, which included who their favourite NHL players are; Rickard’s being Patrick Kane, and Jake’s being Keith Tkachuk. Jake even noticed an old-school Phoenix Coyotes jersey being worn in the class, which brought back a lot of memories of cheering for his favourite player when he was around their age.
The students certainly seemed to have a great time, but so too did Rickard, who was experiencing his first ever community appearance since joining the Rangers at the beginning of this year.
“It’s my first community appearance and I was excited,” said Rickard, whose home is in Sweden. “It was great to meet the kids and teach them and share my love of the game.”
Jake and Rickard reminded kids it’s never too late to be active and try something new. Jake shared that he first started to skate when he was three years old, but Rickard only started when he was seven. They told the students that as long as you practice, you can always improve.
The next visit on the RBC School Tour will be a Captain’s Clinic on Wednesday, December 6th at Breslau Public School.
