Knights Edge The Rangers 4-2
Kitchener, ON: Sergei Kostitstyn scored the eventual game winner with three seconds to play in the second period lifting the London Knights to a 4-2 win over the Rangers before a crowd of 6,339 at The Aud.
The Knights struck for two quick goals in the first period when rookie Sam Gagner, the OHL's leading scorer notched his 9th of the season at 13:20. Fellow rookie Pat Kane scored his 12th goal of the season just twenty seconds later for a 2-0 Knights advantage after the opening twenty minutes.
In the second period Matt Halischuk scored his team leading 16th goal of the season at 15:49 to cut the Rangers deficit to 2-1. Sergei Kostitsyn restored the Knights two goal lead beating John Murray at 19:57 of the second period.
Robert Bortuzzo made it a 3-2 game scoring his first career OHL goal at the 10:07 mark of the third period. Despite a late power play and a flurry of shots towards the London goal the Rangers were unable to score the equalizer. Pat Kane scored his second of the game into the empty net at 19:55 to finish off the scoring at 4-2.
John Murray took the loss in goal allowing three goals on 26 shots.
Rangers fans generously raised a total of $13,289 tonight in the 2nd Annual Remembrance Day jersey auction benefiting the 78th Fraser Highlanders Fort Conestoga Garrison and the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
The Rangers next home game is Friday, November 17th against the Owen Sound Attack. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Jim O’Brien of the Seattle Thunderbirds is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday February 24 after scoring two goals and six assists for eight points in three games.
O’Brien had three assists and was named second star in a 6-1 win over the Prince George Cougars on Wednesday, scored a goal and two assists in a 5-2 win over the Kelowna Rockets on Friday and finished the week with a goal and an assist in a 6-2 win over the Portland Winter Hawks on Saturday. He was plus-7 during the week.
The 19-year-old from Maplewood, Minnesota was a first round pick of the Ottawa Senators in 2007. He is in his first WHL season after playing at the University of Minnesota last season.
Michael Frolik of the Rimouski Oceanic was the QMJHL nominee after scoring two goals and five assists for seven points in three games and Kyle Gajewski of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds was the OHL nominee after going 2-0-0-0 with a shutout last week.
