2008 Kitchener Rangers Hockey Camp Underway
The 2008 installment of the Kitchener Rangers Hockey Camp got underway today at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
At the camp local atom, pee wee and bantam players take part in a program that has been designed to mirror an actual Rangers training camp. Each participant receives a training package at registration that includes a t-shirt, shorts, ball cap and water bottle. Also included in the package is a jersey personalized with the player’s name. There is a limited number of positions in the camp as we only accept 18 forwards, 12 defencemen and four goalies per group. The atoms start the day by hitting the ice at 9:00am. Once they are done their final on-ice session the pee wees begin theirs. The bantams then follow up the pee wees. The groups are staggered in an effort to provide an excellent player-to-instructor ratio.
The day begins with an on-ice goaltending session with the camp’s goaltending instructor, former Rangers goalie Scott Dickie. The goalies then join the rest of the skaters for a power skating session with power skating coach Eddie Choi. After that, the players then go through a practice session headed by Rangers Assistant Coaches Troy Smith and Paul Fixter. Guest coaches George Mulligan, Matt Desmeules and Geoff Haddaway also appear at this week’s camp. Once that is complete they participate in off-ice training activities led by Rangers Trainer Dan Lebold and Strength & Conditioning Coach and former Ranger Brandon Merli. Each day also features a guest appearance from a current or former Rangers player. The camp culminates with the KRHC Classic on Friday. This is where the players in each group are split into two teams for a game.
