Former Petes Captain Spearing Commits to STFX
The STFX Men’s hockey team announced today that former Petes Captain Shawn Spearing has committed to the X-Men for the 2023-24 season. Spearing is coming off of a career season where he captained the Petes to an OHL Championship and Memorial Cup berth.
“We are very pleased to add Shawn to our program,” noted X-Men head coach Brad Peddle. “He is a very reliable D with great size and a high compete level who plays the game with an edge. His leadership and character are highly regarded from his five years in Peterborough and was an integral part and captain of an OHL championship and Memorial Cup team this past season.”
Spearing, a defenceman from Toronto, ON, was originally selected by the Petes in the fourth round, 75th overall, of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16. Spearing became a staple on the Petes blue line over the next five years, suiting up 156 times for the Maroon and White. The predominantly defensive defenceman was tasked with shutting down some of the top players in the OHL during his time with the Petes, while also scoring three times and adding 15 assists in four seasons.
“I’m very excited to commit to STFX,” exclaimed Spearing. “I’ve heard great things about the school and the program and can’t wait to get started.”
Spearing has served as Petes captain since 2021, becoming the teams 61st captain and the ninth captain to wear the “C” for multiple seasons. During his overage year this season, Spearing led the Petes to an OHL Championship and Memorial Cup birth, despite suffering a broken jaw from a blocked shot in the Eastern Conference Championships against the North Bay Battalion. Shawn is no stranger to leading winning teams, having also captained his Toronto Jr. Canadiens U16 team to an OHL Cup Championship in 2018.
