Rye Stops 42/43 for First Home Win as Petes Beat Battalion
It was the first Saturday night at the PMC of the season for the Peterborough Petes as they hosted the North Bay Battalion on November 23. The game would be the Petes third in three days, after losing to Brantford at home on Thursday and falling in a shootout to Kingston on Friday. Peterborough native Easton Rye was back in net for the Petes, after rookie goaltender Masen Johnston stopped 29/32 in Kingston the night before.
After giving up a goal on the opponents first shot the last two nights, it was finally Peterborough’s turn to do the same. Just under two minutes into the game, Liam Ladds made a beautiful move breaking into the zone. After beating the defender, he hit Braydon McCallum cross-crease, who scored his first of the season to make it 1-0. After the goal, the Petes kept the pressure on. Five minutes later, Martin Matejicek went end-to-end, dropping the puck to Gavin Bryant who scored to double Peterborough’s lead. Easton Rye would take it from there, stopping all 16 North Bay shots in the first to keep the Petes 2-0 lead intact heading into the break.
The middle frame would remain scoreless for over 14 minutes, with both goalies standing tall. Peterborough looked to make their lead three after Aiden Young scored on a rebound, but North Bay challenged the goal and it was called back for goaltender interference. Motivated by the disallowed goal, Young took the game into his own hands, scoring an unassisted goal just minutes later to make it 3-0 for real. Late in the period, with a man advantage, North Bay would break through on a Shamar Moses goal, making the score 3-1 heading into the final frame.
Rye would continue to stand on his head in the third, stopping all 16 Battalion shots in the period. Braydon McCallum would add one more into the empty net, securing the Petes 4-1 win.
Peterborough native Easton Rye led the way for the Petes, stopping 42/43 for his first win at home, while also being named the game’s first star. Braydon McCallum scored twice, while Gavin Bryant and Aiden Young also scored. Caden Taylor, Liam Ladds, and Martin Matejicek all picked up an assist in the game.
