Petes Alumnus Shawn Evans Announced as Assistant Coach of QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques
The Gatineau Olympiques announced today that they have hired former Petes defenceman, Shawn Evans as the team’s new Assistant Coach. Evans joins the Olympiques after 20 years as the Head Coach and General Manager of the Truro Bearcats in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.
A native of Kingston, ON, Evans joined the Petes in 1982 after being selected by the team in the third round of the 1982 OHL Draft. During his time with the Maroon and White, Evans would feature in 191 games over three seasons, recording a franchise record 256 points by a defenceman. During the 1983-83 season, Evans became the only Petes defenceman to ever register a 100 point season when he tallied 109 points in 67 games.
In 1983, the New Jersey Devils selected Evans with the 24th overall pick in round two of the NHL Entry Draft. He would go on to play nine NHL games, recording one goal. Evans spent the rest of his 14 professional seasons in the AHL, IHL, UHL, ECHL, NLA (Switzerland), and Italy.
After beginning his coaching career in 1998 with the Mohawk Valley Prowlers of the UHL, Evans would spend time behind the bench with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL and Dartmouth Blizzard of the Maritime Hockey League before finding a home in Truro, where he would spend the next 20 seasons.
