STORM SNAP KNIGHTS’ STREAK
Coaches and players always talk about how big special teams are in hockey. Anyone who doubted that fact needed to be in Guelph on Sunday. The London Knights and the Guelph Storm combined for nine power play goals as the Storm beat London 9-4 to end the Knights’ eight game winning streak.
The Storm scored three power play goals in the first period and five overall to jump to a 5-2 lead.
Pius Suter and Robbie Fabbri each recorded hat tricks and Tyler Bertuzzi had seven points on two goals and five assists. Mitch Marner scored both London goals in the opening period for London, one set up by Max Domi and the other by Matt Rupert.
The Knights made the game close in period two. They killed two Guelph power plays early and then cashed in on two of their own as Michael McCarron ripped a shot from the slot and then poked home a Max Domi rebound to get the Knights to within one.
A 4-on-3 Guelph power play restored a two-goal lead for Guelph as Suter found Robby Fabbri at the side of the net for a 6-4 lead.
Two Storm forwards completed hat tricks in the third as Robby Fabbri put a fourth Guelph power play goal into the Knight net and then Pius Suter was sent in alone with just over five minutes left.
Ben Harpur ended the scoring with a sixth power play goal late in the game.
The Knights will play a home and home with Owen Sound starting Friday at 7:30 at Budweiser Gardens.
