IceDogs Stumble Against Spitfires
NIAGARA, ON – The Niagara IceDogs fell just short of claiming two points on Sunday, falling to (23-12-2-1) on the season, after a 4-3 Overtime loss to the Windsor Spitfires.
The first period started off with both teams feeling each other out. After the initial few minutes, there were incredible saves made from both Owen Flores and Michael Newlove to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes.
The second period was much more entertaining scoring-wise than the first, with four goals in the second – two from each squad. Ryan Roobroeck opened the scoring for Niagara, with Noah Van Vliet scoring a wrap-around just two minutes later to make it 2-0 IceDogs. However, Windsor battled back and scored two consecutive goals before the period was finished to make it 2-2 headed into second intermission.
The Third frame was a battleground, with Max Crete eventually breaking the deadlock – scoring his tenth goal of the season to make it 3-2. Though the Spitfires were determined to tie the game, and did just that with a late third period goal to even it up at three. In the last minute of action, Blair Scott took a costly slashing penalty which landed the IceDogs on the penalty kill with just 31 seconds left in regulation. With that being said, the IceDogs survived the final push from the Spitfires and made it to the extra frame to earn a point.
In the Overtime period, it was LA Kings first rounder Liam Greentree who sealed the deal for the Spitfires, roofing a backhand shot over the sprawling Owen Flores to earn the two points.
The IceDogs are back in action on Thursday, January 9th against the Saginaw Spirit at Meridian Centre at 7:00 pm.
