Windsor, Ont. – Two Spitfires recorded four-points in a 5-3 victory over the Firebirds before more than 4,400 fans at the WFCU Centre on Thursday night.
Logan Brown started the scoring off for the Windsor Spitfires at 7:34 of the opening frame. During four-on-four play, Windsor’s Brendan Lemieux dished the puck to Mikhail Sergachev at the right circle. Sergachev then ripped the puck on net before colliding with Flint’s Brent Moran, giving Brown a tap-in goal.
In the second period, Lemieux drove around a Firebirds’ defenseman at the left circle and scored over Moran’s right shoulder, before Christian Fischer increased the Spitfires lead to three goals on a blast from the right point, above Moran’s right shoulder while on the power play.
Former Windsor forward Luke Kirwin then scored for Flint in his first game against the Spitfires when Håkon Nilsen’s shot was deflected wide and Ryan Moore, also a former Spitfire, found Kirwin in the slot from below the goal line for his second goal in two games.
The Firebirds brought the game within one goal when Nick Caamano dropped the puck back from Windsor’s right circle to a streaking Vili Saarijärvi who sniped the disc over Michael DiPietro’s left shoulder.
At 6:53 of the final frame, Sergachev found the back of the net from the right point, blocker side, for Windsor’s eventual game-winning goal. Bradley Latour then scored short side from the right circle for Windsor’s final tally of the evening.
Flint would score their third goal of the evening when Keenan Reynolds passed the puck from the Spitfires far corner to Dane Johnstone in the slot who buried five-hole for his fifth goal of the season.
The Firebirds will return home to the Dort Federal Event Center this Saturday, Jan. 23 against the Windsor Spitfires with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m.
